TERRITORY

During this day we will explore dynamics of mapping, reappropriation, defence and management of disused and contested territories. After a moment of horizontal sharing on terminology and concepts, the collectives we have invited will share theories and practices of their work, during three parallel sessions.

WORKSHOP 1 MAPPING

Morning
Mapping as a project

The workshop will start with an introduction of two mapping projects developed by two different realities coming from different parts of Italy: one regarding the built heritage and the public spaces of Gagliano Aterno, a small village in central Italy, made by Elena Demaria Childers within the association Montagne in Movimento, the second one regarding public land use of the territory of Rovereto, situated in northern Italy, by Flora Mammana part of the association La Foresta - Accademia di comunità.

We will then introduce the concept of the map as an instrument of perception and awareness of nature, and as a practical tool of analysis and definition of possible future projects.

WORKSHOP 2 ACCESS TO COMMON SPACES

Morning
Creation of a Fair of “Disused Spaces”

By reconnecting with the local tradition of the village ‘agricultural fair’, the idea is to work together to organise an event which allows both to extend the discussion on living in inner areas, and to produce an instant mapping of the disused and available real estate assets in the Fiastra Valley.

At the 2024 Social Camp the workshop aims to clarify the characteristics of this event and prepare an organisational and creative document on how to set it up in order to maximise engagement and raise awareness on the topic by both the resident community and the local administration.

Facilitator: Inabita

Language: Italiano, Inglese

Afternoon
Modes of access to public lands

As an alternative to the dominant paradigms of land privatisation and commodification of its products, we analyse the models of the “comunanze agrarie” (agrarian commons) and of the cooperative management of public land with the Common Grounds collective and the the Agriculture Cooperative Co.r.ag.gio (italian for Roman Youth Agriculture Cooperative), which was assigned the Borghetto San Carlo estate in Rome.

Defence from speculation

In an ever densely populated and capitalised world, the fight for land as common good is pivotal. An activist of the NoPorto Collective and members from Soulèvements de la Terre - Italia will talk about their fights against land speculation and dispossession in a coastal area of Fiumicino and in italian contested territories respectively, sharing experiences, strategies and challenges in their actions.

Welatparêzî — espressione curda che significa “amore e difesa della terra”.
