Circular Economy

1) Introduction: from linearity to circularity

What is circular economy? How does it affect product and material flows? How does it differ from the linear paradigm? To answer these and similar questions, we will go through the life cycle of a mobile phone and of a t-shirt. For each of the two products, we will reconstruct and compare the main steps of the life cycle under the linear and the circular paradigms. We will conclude our discussion with examples of circular practices already implemented by firms in the electronic and textile sectors.

2) Urban circularity and the image of Smart City

The concept of Smart City is increasingly used as a hypothetical solution to environmental issues that affect disparate urban contexts. Together with professor Alberto Vanolo from the University of Torino we will analyze political implications of this notion and the contradictions that arise planning technological and smart urban places for environmental purposes.

3) Coffee scrub – workshop of natural cosmetics

Coffee is a symbol of sociality, everybody loves its smell and the energy it gives us! But it also has manifold beneficial properties for the body and skin. Together with Patricia we will make a coffee scrub and we will share tricks and ideas on eco-cosmetics. As we blender natural ingredients we will talk about microplastics and ecological alternatives to cosmetics that we use in our everyday life.
Bring together with you that jar that has been waiting to be reused and a notebook to record Patricia’s precious tips!

4) Braided paper coasters – workshop of eco home decor

Coasters are objects that escort our drinks since 1880, they come in different shapes, materials and colors. In the course of the workshop we will create paper coasters using scrap paper collected in town which we will fold and braid. What we commonly consider a waste it becomes a resource that can be used to generate new products, therefore, avoiding the consumption of new resources and energy: the workshop becomes an opportunity to share online channels on the use of waste as raw materials.

5) Let’s close the cycle: the culture of reuse

In addition to the ideas and concepts related to the circular economy, there are people who work on these issues in everyday life and who struggle to bring forward a new culture of reuse. In this module we will meet the experience of the “Centro del Riuso” of Macerata and that of “Nonsonorifiuti.it” of Rome. With Alessandro we will learn the importance of education in everyday practices and how only a cultural approach to the question can reverse the consumerist trend.
